Cassava and sweet potato are alternative foods that can easily replace the traditional cereals like maize and wheat in times of drought and scarcity in Africa. Eight countries in East and Central Africa (ECA) embarked on a project to enhance sustainable production of the crops, value addition and competitiveness of these crops.

Project activities included promoting utilization of tissue culture applications in cassava and sweet potato multiplication in the ECA sub-region. Consequently, the AfriCenter established a database with information on tissue culture activities within the ASARECA countries and other regional and international sources.
