Inside the Biotech Lab: How to Genetically Engineer a Plan, ISAAA 2018
Biotechnology is one of the most controversial fields of science and technology. Some people think that it is a highly complicated field of science, with questions raised against how things are done by scientists in the lab and what their real intentions are in developing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The fear of the unknown sometimes becomes an excuse to exercise the precautionary principle, which could block the progress of biotech innovations. This booklet developed by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) seeks to dispel fears about biotechnology by showing images of what actually happens inside the biotech laboratory. The process of developing a genetically engineered (GE) plant is explained using simple terms and images. The images in this booklet with ISAAA icon are available in a photo database for public use. Journalists and other media practitioners are encouraged to use the photos to better represent biotechnology in their articles and replace fearmongering images that are widespread in the media, especially online. African Union Commission: Post-Harvest Loss Management Strategy
The Post-Harvest Loss Management Strategy developed by the African Union Commission provide guidance and support at the national level in the attainment of the Malabo Declaration Commitment with specific regards to the third commitment to ending hunger by 2025 through, among other interventions, halving (decreasing by 50%) the current levels of post-harvest losses by the year 2025.The concept of post-harvest loss management that this strategy presents describes an integrated approach to dealing with post-harvest losses by bringing together all possible forms of approaches across the entire agricultural value chain that together contribute to reduced levels of losses occurring during and post harvesting of grains, fruits, vegetables, oilseeds and all food crops, livestock and fisheries products. It is intended that the African Union Post-Harvest Loss Management Strategy contribute to enhanced food and nutrition security at the Member States level through reduced post-harvest losses in food including horticultural crops, livestock and fisheries products.
