ISSUE NO.99
Cultivating Resilience, Inspiring Change

Welcome to this month's edition of Drumbeat, where we spotlight the people, ideas and breakthroughs shaping agriculture. As farmers navigate the growing challenges of climate change and crop production, their experiences offer important insights into the realities of farming and the solutions needed to build more resilient food systems. In our Video of the Month, farmers share firsthand accounts of how climate change is affecting their production, bringing their voices and experiences to the forefront.

Our Story of the Month takes us to Ghana, where agricultural science is helping farmers tackle one of cowpea's most destructive pests. In GM Cowpea: Ghana's Farmers' Success Against the Destructive Pod Borer, we explore how pod-borer-resistant cowpea is helping farmers reduce crop losses and insecticide use while improving their prospects for better harvests. The story highlights the importance of scientific research, stakeholder collaboration and farmer engagement in addressing persistent agricultural challenges.

There is more to explore in our Newsroom, featuring the month's highlights, opportunities and noteworthy developments. From emerging research and practical solutions to opportunities for engagement and collaboration, we bring you updates worth catching up on. Dive into this month's stories and discover the people, progress and possibilities driving development.

STORY OF THE MONTH
GM Cowpea: Ghana's farmers' success against the destructive pod borer

For years, the Maruca pod borer, Maruca vitrata, that notorious, pantropical insect pest that decimates leguminous crops like pigeon pea, cowpea, mung bean and soybean, played a winning game of hide-and-seek with Ghanaian cowpea farmers, frustrating them season after season. It stood as the most damaging of pests devouring cowpea, and was responsible for up to 80% of yield losses. Dr. Jerry Asalma Nboyine, Principal Research Scientist and Entomologist at CSIR - Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-SARI) in Nyankpala, Ghana, explains ... Read more
