Dear Reader,
What does it take to move Africa's research and innovation from the lab to the market? In this issue of The Drumbeat, we turn our focus to a critical but often overlooked piece of the puzzle - biosafety systems, and the loopholes that continue to delay the commercialisation of research across the continent.
Although Africa has made significant progress in scientific research, translating these gains into tangible products has been a problem. Regulatory bottlenecks, fragmented frameworks, and lack of engagement between researchers and regulators are key obstacles. However, they are not insurmountable challenges but opportunities for reform and growth.
Our Story of the Month explores how the culture of "regulatory-by-design," regulatory capacity building, and strengthening biosafety systems can hasten the research to market process. The story draws on the experiences of some of the best in the region and explores viable measures to unlock the full potential of biotechnology sector in Africa.
The Video of the Month takes us to Ethiopia, where significant strides have been made to create an effective regulatory system for genome editing. Focusing on evolution of its biosafety legislation, through to the approval of genome editing guidelines, Ethiopia gives a glimpse of what is possible when research, biosafety systems, and drive for impact align. Could this be a model for Africa?
As Africa looks to harness biotechnology to feed its population, planetary health, and economic growth, the message is clear: robust, responsive biosafety systems are not just supportive - they are vital.
Read and watch - enjoy.
