ISSUE NO.92
Welcome to issue 92 of The DrumBeat!

Dear Reader,

In DrumBeat 92, you are likely to see the word 'research' mentioned quite a number of times. This repetition, or recurrence, is deliberate, especially because our focus this month is on progress that has been made lately in enabling research across the continent, as the precursor to relevant scientific innovations that are made in, and for, Africa.

You see, we often talk about science, research and innovation as a surefire intervention to secure Africa's food security, but then it, in many instances, the debate and promise end there. What if we formulated sustainable mechanisms that will offer solid support for this science, research and innovation? The Video of The Month details the making of Kenya's Research Financing and Capacity Strengthening Master Plan, a formidable blueprint which is expected to plug many gaps in research in Kenya.

In The Story of The Month, Dr Paul Chege, Senior Program Officer at ISAAA AfriCenter, takes us through the development process of this Master Plan. As you will see, it was made out of the painstaking efforts of a variety of relevant stakeholders, and it was well thought out to lead this country into prosperity. It seeks to address gaps that have, for years, crippled research in Kenya.

We talk about STISA 34, African Union's strategic framework for delivering on Africa's goal for inclusive and sustainable development, and we brood over climate change in Africa and how our response affects food security, taking into account recent developments, such as heavy rains pounding in East Africa and the devastating effects they have had in Nairobi.

If ever we talked about research, then it is now. Enjoy the read.

STORY OF THE MONTH
Perspective on the Research Financing and Capacity Strengthening Masterplan Development Process

Kenya has given herself a roadmap to transform how it finances, governs, and leverages research for national development. In a context where ambition has often outpaced coordination and where innovation potential has not always been matched by predictable investment, the adoption of the Research Financing and Capacity Strengthening Masterplan marks a decisive institutional shift. It signals not only policy clarity, but ... Read more

Building on STISA 24, the next phase (STISA 34) explores Africa's socio-economic excellence

After the lapse of The Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA 24), experts, governments, institutions and African stakeholders consultatively developed STISA 34 as a means to its predecessor's continuation and review. STISA 34 was developed to tackle emerging global and regional challenges as well as address gaps in STISA 24. It gave more cognizance on the use of ... Read more

Kenya must rethink strategies to feed citizens as climate change rears ugly head once again

On the afternoon of March 6, days after the Kenya Meteorological Department had sent a circular warning Kenyans of potential flash floods, Nairobi, the capital city, was hit with the worst torrent in recent history, killing 23 overnight. As that was happening, millions of pastoralists and their livestock in the north of Kenya were facing a debilitating drought. This was not a new occurrence. Read more
