Dear Reader,
In DrumBeat 92, you are likely to see the word 'research' mentioned quite a number of times. This repetition, or recurrence, is deliberate, especially because our focus this month is on progress that has been made lately in enabling research across the continent, as the precursor to relevant scientific innovations that are made in, and for, Africa.
You see, we often talk about science, research and innovation as a surefire intervention to secure Africa's food security, but then it, in many instances, the debate and promise end there. What if we formulated sustainable mechanisms that will offer solid support for this science, research and innovation? The Video of The Month details the making of Kenya's Research Financing and Capacity Strengthening Master Plan, a formidable blueprint which is expected to plug many gaps in research in Kenya.
In The Story of The Month, Dr Paul Chege, Senior Program Officer at ISAAA AfriCenter, takes us through the development process of this Master Plan. As you will see, it was made out of the painstaking efforts of a variety of relevant stakeholders, and it was well thought out to lead this country into prosperity. It seeks to address gaps that have, for years, crippled research in Kenya.
We talk about STISA 34, African Union's strategic framework for delivering on Africa's goal for inclusive and sustainable development, and we brood over climate change in Africa and how our response affects food security, taking into account recent developments, such as heavy rains pounding in East Africa and the devastating effects they have had in Nairobi.
If ever we talked about research, then it is now. Enjoy the read.
