ISSUE NO.88
Welcome to issue 88 of The DrumBeat!

Storytelling is in our DNA, but few stories are as compelling as those where science and innovation shape our lives better. This is precisely the rhythm of the DrumBeat - capturing Africa's journey of ingenuity in the face of climate uncertainty.

We kick off this edition with our Video of the Month unveiling a breakthrough in the battle against two devastating cassava diseases in eastern Africa: cassava brown streak disease and cassava mosaic disease. Thanks to collaboration between Kenyan scientists and their global peers, disease-resistant biotech cassava has been developed - a potential lifeline for farmers once it receives commercial approval.

In our Story of the Month, a young African scientist shares his excitement and reflections from the Sixth International Workshop on Regulatory Approaches for Agricultural Applications of Animal Biotechnologies. Through his eyes, we gain rare insight into how emerging animal biotechnologies can be governed in ways that are science-driven, proportionate and genuinely enabling.

Finally, we bring you highlights from the 6th edition of the Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication Symposium held three months ago in Lusaka, Zambia. This latest edition of the DrumBeat captures the pulse of innovation like never before!

Kenyans Submit Comments on Proposed Commercialization of Biotech Cassava

A new cassava variety, genetically improved against cassava diseases, may soon be available to Kenyan farmers if the country's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) approves it for commercialization. Developed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, the new cassava - called KingaKUU cassava - is resistant to Brown Streak Disease (CBSD) and Mosaic Disease (CMD).
