ISSUE NO.79
Welcome to issue 79 of The DrumBeat!

Cheers to the new year!

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome 2025.

Fresh as it comes, the One Health landscape is already taking great shape with global alignment and lots of planning activities to address climate change impact such as increased droughts, emerging and re-emerging diseases, as well as resistance to antimicrobials.

We are taken through a critical review of Africa's drought challenge due to climate change in the story of the month. A rallying call to action from the author is a reminder that we need to reflect on the past as we prepare and plan to mitigate effects of climate change. Apart from the proposed multidisciplinary collaboration for practical and innovative solutions, the quote of the month stresses the importance of enabling regulatory environment especially for socio-economic cushioning.

From our newsroom, we focus on developments from our collaborative Capacitating One Health in East and Southern Africa (COHESA) project by sharing articles from the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States Research and Innovation program's (OACPS-RI's) magazine. Dr. Leandre Ishema, a One Health expert from Rwanda and Prof. Mirgissa Kaba, a One Health expert from Ethiopia account the benefits from interventions by the COHESA project in their respective countries including AfriCenter's contribution especially in facilitating One Health net mapping activities.

Our video of the month is on Namibia's One Health landscape. It highlights the value of net mapping exercise organized by COHESA project under AfriCenter's facilitation, and the country's strategic plans to improve One Health interventions, a process that contributed to the development of a new tripartite One Health Strategy 2024-2028 for Namibia with support from COHESA-Namibia team and other partners.

In the spirit of new year resolutions, our announcement and publication section reminds you to book an early slot for the ABBC 2025 and benefit from the upcoming pre-symposium programs that include series of webinars and bio-innovation hackathons. We call upon partners and collaborators to join us in making disinformation a losing strategy. We also encourage readers to register for upcoming webinars on One Health as shared through the CABI journal Digital Library.

Finally, a detailed version of the OACPS-RI's magazine is also shared for more information on COHESA and progress made in Africa's One Health landscape.

Enjoy!

STORY OF THE MONTH
Drought and Hunger in Southern Africa a Wake-Up Call for African Experts
