Striga Smart Sorghum for Africa

Dear Reader,

27th August 2024

We are thrilled to present another edition highlighting the Feed the Future Striga Smart Sorghum for Africa (SSSfA). This collaborative, multi-institutional project in Kenya and Ethiopia leverages genome editing (GEd) technology to develop robust resistance against Striga, commonly known as 'witchweed', which poses a severe threat to sorghum and other cereal crops in sub-Saharan Africa.

This month's video highlights the SSSfA project's efforts, through the Africa Biosciences Hubs (AfriBIOHubs) initiative, to reduce the cost of conducting biotechnology research by promoting the domestic biomanufacturing of essential laboratory reagents. Particularly, these efforts are primarily geared towards enhancing the local capacity for routine GEd research and commercialization.

Our story of the month features Rediet Guta, a Master's student at Addis Ababa University, who participated in the Ethiopia edition of the Enzyme Manufacturing Masterclass (EMM2024) course, organized under the partnership of the SSSfA project at the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETin) in Addis Ababa. Rediet recaps how the two weeks of hands-on biomanufacturing training expanded her molecular biology technical skillset and ignited a newfound passion for real-world applications of science.

From our newsroom, we share highlights of various activities within the AfriCenter portfolio, including updates on the ongoing 5th International Workshop on Regulatory Approaches for Agricultural Applications of Animal Biotechnologies.

Story of the Month

Enzyme Manufacturing Masterclass (EMM2024): Promoting Self-reliance in Bioscience R&D

As a young biotechnology enthusiast, I recently had the privilege of attending the Basic and Advanced Enzyme Manufacturing Masterclass (EMM2024) program, organized under the partnership of Feed the Future Striga Smart Sorghum for Africa (SSSfA) project. This comprehensive, two-week experience brought together a diverse cohort of 25 trainees from various universities and research centers - and I was honored to be a part of it. It expanded my technical skillset and ignited a newfound passion for the real-world applications of science. Read More

Striga Smart Sorghum for Africa (SSSfA) Project holds a Science Communication Workshop for Stakeholders

Sorghum stakeholders in Kenya and Ethiopia have called for more investment in demystifying science through effective communication to foster trust and acceptance of emerging gene technologies. Speaking during a science communication and regulatory workshop held from July 30 to August 1 in Nairobi, the stakeholders were concerned that without public trust, the potential of new agricultural innovations would not be realized. Kenyan Government takes a Bold Step in the Fight against Misinformation

A delegation from various ministerial departments within the Kenyan government has committed to combating the widespread misinformation plaguing the biotechnology sector, recognizing its detrimental impact in hindering the nation's progress in this crucial area. The technocrats cited many instances in social gatherings, including social media groups where misinformation, sometimes with deliberate attempts to cause fear and curtail the adoption of biotechnology have rendered them victims of the distortion. They were speaking at a field visit organized by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA AfriCenter) and its partners on July 22, 2024, at a Bt cotton farm in Kirinyaga Central, Kenya.
