Dear reader,
It has been slightly over a month since the curtains fell on the Africa Biennial Bioscience Communication (ABBC) Symposium, 2023. In light of this, we are delighted to bring you a special DrumBeat edition dedicated to ABBC. The Symposium has come a long way since its inception, and this year, it was more inclusive, dynamic, and forward-thinking than ever before. With a broader scope that encompassed not only crop biotechnology, this year's ABBC was a buildup of lessons and reflections from previous sessions.
In our Story of the Month, ISAAA AfriCenter's Director and Co-convenor of the ABBC Symposium, Dr. Margaret Karembu, builds a case for why this biennial platform matters. Dr. Karembu provides a brief background on the genesis of ABBC, and snippets of the five editions that have contributed towards framing pertinent narratives in Africa's agricultural biotechnology landscape.
Our Video of Month attempts to answer a fundamental question that informed ABBC 2023's theme on whether communication is matching up with the evolution of genetic improvement tools in agriculture. Stories from Our Newsroom highlight some key events from the Symposium. The ISAAA AfriCenter team is looking forward to seeing how ideas and collaborations sparked during ABBC 2023 will shape the future of genetic improvement tools in agriculture. To keep track of genome edited projects in the region, we will continue to update the Genome Editing in Africa's Agriculture: An Early Take-off booklet. To be featured in the Fourth Edition, register your genome editing project here.
ABBC represents the collaborative spirit of our delegates, partners and sponsors, and the commitment to harnessing bioscience for the betterment of our continent. We hope this special edition of DrumBeat inspires you and deepens your understanding of the critical role this Symposium plays in shaping bioscience development in Africa.
Enjoy your read!
